The Alaskan quake in 1960 created havoc in Morro Bay. Earl was trying to replace some floats under a pier when the hoist broke and the pier fell on him. This tragic accident ended his life. He was a diver for many years but then began albacore fishing when the otters cleaned out all the abalone.
