The three characters on the front of the monument literally translate as "soul consoling tower" and/or "memorial to the dead."
Ryozo Kado, who had been a landscaper and stone mason for the Los Angeles Catholic diocese was chosen to design and supervise the
block nine project. The inscriptions were written by Manzanar's Buddhist minister Rev.Shinjo Nagatomi.
